Delta Air Lines A321neo Fumes in the Cockpit on Descent into Boston

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A321neo arriving from Seattle reported the presence of fumes on the flight deck during its approach to Boston on 19 November.

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A321neo arriving from Seattle, WA reported the presence of fumes on the flight deck during its approach to Boston, MA on 19 November 2024.

Delta Air Lines flight DL473, operated by an Airbus A321neo, was conducting an approach to runway 33L Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).  During the descent phase, flight crew reported the presence of fumes on the flight deck.

The aircraft continued its approach and landed without incident on runway 33L. A subsequent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) report confirmed the incident.

“Delta Air Lines Flight 473 landed safely at Boston Logan International Airport around 7:35 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Nov. 19 after the crew reported possible fumes in the flight deck. The Airbus A321 departed Seattle–Tacoma International Airport.”

The FAA will now investigate the approach incident.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight DL473 had made in on time departure Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA) at 2315 local time on 18 November.

The flight had then proceeded normally, climbing to flight Level FL350 for the easterly service it to Boston. Top of descent procedures were conducted normally, and flight crew reported the issue during the descent into Boston.

The aircraft conducting the DL473 service from Seattle was an Airbus A321neo, registered N535DN.

This is a 1.5 year old narrow body aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in June 2023.
