Delta A330 Rejects Takeoff in Las Vegas Due to Engine Problem

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-300 preparing to depart for Atlanta rejected takeoff in Las Vegas following a righthand engine failure on 28 October 2024.

Delta Air Lines flight DL777 had been given clearance for takeoff from runway 26R Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). As the aircraft was accelerating for takeoff flight crew reported experiencing an engine failure. As a result, flight crew rejected the takeoff at low speed.

According to the online source Aviation Herald, reports from other aircraft said that the right-hand engine was on fire, with smoke and flames emitting from the aircraft exhaust.

The flight crew performed engine fire checklists for the right-hand engine, and emergency services assets attended the aircraft. According to reports from both emergency services and the airport control tower, no smoke or fire was evident from the engine.

Airline operations were summoned to tow the aircraft from its position on the runway. Flight crew had performed a shutdown of both engines and had no observed engine fire indication. The passengers remained on board the aircraft during the procedure.

According to an observation by one of the passengers on board, the aircraft had “experienced a complete engine failure”.

Available flight data suggests that the aircraft had only attained a ground speed of approximately 20-24kt before the rejected takeoff procedure was initiated.

This is a 21.1 year old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines. It has been operational service with the airline since October 2008. Prior to its current service it was operated by Northwest Airlines. Northwest operated the aircraft from its initial delivery from the factory in October 2003.
