Delta A321-200 Returns to Fort Lauderdale Due to Fumes in the Cockpit

A Delta Air Lines A321-200 departing for New York LaGuardia returned to Fort Lauderdale after reporting fumes in the cockpit on 29 October.

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A321-200 departing for New York made a return to Fort Lauderdale, FL after flight crew reported the presence of fumes in the cockpit.

Delta Air Lines flight DL2133, operated by an Airbus A321-200, had conducted a departure from runway at 10L Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The aircraft was conducting a scheduled service to New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA).

During the initial climb after takeoff, flight crew reported the presence of fumes on the flight deck. The climb was discontinued and flight crew negotiated a direct return to the origin airport.

The flight subsequently landed without further incident on runway 10L, approximately 15 minutes after its initial departure.

A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) report confirmed the after takeoff incident. “Delta Air Lines Flight 2133 returned safely to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida around 7:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, October 29, after the crew reported smelling fumes in the flightdeck. The Airbus A321 was headed to LaGuardia Airport in New York. The FAA will investigate.”

The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to complete the scheduled service to New York LaGuardia.

Flight data shows that the flight DL2133 had conducted a departure from Fort Lauderdale at 0708 local time on 29 October.

After takeoff, the aircraft had passed through 7000 feet before flight crew discontinued the climb procedure. Flight crew then squawked emergency transponder code 7700 and initiated a direct return to the origin airport.

The aircraft conducting the DL2133 rotation to New York was an Airbus A321-200, registered N114DN. This is a 3.8-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines.
