This delivery marks a further step in the airline’s ambitious fleet renewal project, coinciding with its 35th anniversary celebration.

Major Fleet Renewal Program

The arrival of the A220-300 is just the first step in Croatia Airlines’ ambitious fleet renewal program. The airline has committed to acquiring a total of 15 new-generation aircraft, including 13 A220-300s and two A220-100s.

This initiative represents the largest and most significant project in the company’s three-and-a-half-decade history. This event is particularly noteworthy as it coincides with Croatia Airlines’ 35th anniversary.

Jasmin Bajić, CEO of Croatia Airlines, spoke on the importance of the new delivery, saying: “Today marks a pivotal moment for Croatia Airlines.”

“The introduction of the A220 to our fleet is not just an upgrade. It’s a transformation that will redefine our operations and passenger experience. As we celebrate our 35th year, we’re setting the stage for decades of sustainable growth and superior service.”

Airbus A220 Benefits

The single-aisle Airbus A220 brings a host of technological advancements that promise to revolutionize Croatia Airlines’ operations:

  1. Fuel Efficiency: The aircraft boasts a remarkable 25% reduction in fuel consumption per seat compared to previous generation aircraft.
  2. Reduced Emissions: Along with lower fuel burn comes a 25% decrease in CO2 emissions, significantly reducing the airline’s carbon footprint.
  3. Noise Reduction: The A220 delivers a 50% reduction in noise footprint, enhancing the quality of life in communities near airports.
  4. Cleaner Air: NOx emissions are slashed by 40% compared to industry standards, contributing to better air quality.
  5. Sustainable Fuel Compatibility: The A220 can already operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for 100% SAF compatibility across its fleet by 2030.

Range and Market

The A220 is uniquely designed for the 100-150 seat market, offering unparalleled comfort and efficiency in its class. Passengers will enjoy:

  • Wider seats for enhanced comfort
  • Larger windows, providing better views and a more spacious feel
  • More overhead bin space, reducing the stress of cabin baggage storage

From an operational perspective, the A220 has an impressive range. Reaching up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 kilometers), it opens new possibilities for Croatia Airlines.

This capability will allow the carrier to gradually expand its route network, potentially introducing new direct connections between Croatia and destinations across Europe and beyond.

The A220 program has gained significant traction in the aviation industry. As of June 2024, approximately 30 airlines have placed orders for over 900 A220 aircraft, solidifying its position as a leader in the small single-aisle market.

With more than 340 A220s currently in service across 1,400 routes and 440 destinations worldwide, the aircraft has already carried over 100 million passengers.
