Congo Airways has secured a second Boeing 737-800 aircraft through a lease agreement with KlasJet. This marking a further step in the operational recovery of the national carrier of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The airline has faced various challenges, including financial difficulties and operational issues, due to the complex political and economic environment in the DRC.

This strategic move comes as part of the airline’s comprehensive plan to strengthen its domestic network and restore full service capacity.

Expanding Domestic Operations

The latest aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 registered LY-MGM, joins Congo Airways’ fleet on a six-month lease contract. It mirrors the terms of the first Boeing 737 agreement announced in October 2024.

Both aircraft will operate from their base at Kinshasa Ndjili International Airport (FIH), primarily serving domestic routes throughout the vast DRC territory.

Congo Airways, established in 2014, has faced recent operational challenges after grounding its two Airbus A320 aircraft for essential engine maintenance.

This temporary fleet reduction necessitated creative solutions to maintain vital air connections across the DRC, a country where air transport plays a crucial role due to limited ground infrastructure.

Ongoing Partnership with KlasJet

KlasJet, a subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group (ASG), brings significant expertise to this partnership as part of the world’s largest ACMI provider.

The company specializes in private and corporate jet charter services, offering flexible solutions for airlines requiring temporary fleet capacity.

Augustinas Riskus, KlasJet’s Deputy Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to Congo Airways’ recovery.

“We are delighted to deepen our support of Congo Airways with a second 737 lease. The partnership, which begins in mid-November, offers an ideal bridge back to operational status for the airline.”

The current collaboration builds upon a successful four-month contract between the two companies in 2023. This extended partnership demonstrates KlasJet’s confidence in Congo Airways’ market potential and commitment to the African aviation sector.

ACMI Lease Agreement

The ACMI arrangement provided by KlasJet extends beyond the aircraft provision. The comprehensive package includes professional flight crew staffing to ensure smooth operations.

Additionally, complete maintenance support services are provided during the period of flight operations. The agreement also covers comprehensive insurance coverage for all operations.

Perhaps most valuably, KlasJet is sharing its operational expertise to support Congo Airways’ return to full service.

Regional Impact and Future Prospects

The expanded fleet capacity arrives at a crucial time for Congo Airways, as the airline works to enhance connectivity across the DRC’s major cities and economic centers.

This development is particularly significant for multiple sectors within the country. The business community will benefit from improved transportation options for commerce and trade.

The tourism sector stands to gain from enhanced accessibility to various destinations. Regional trade facilitation will improve through better air connectivity. Additionally, emergency medical services will have greater access to air transportation when needed.

With these additional aircraft, Congo Airways is better positioned to fulfill its role as the DRC’s flag carrier and meet the growing demand for reliable air transportation services in the region.
