Cologne Bonn Airport achieved a significant milestone in 2024, welcoming over 10 million passengers. This marks its return to double-digit millions for the first time since 2019.
The revival in passenger numbers reflects a strong recovery in international travel demand, with travelers showing particular preferences for sunny holiday destinations and family visits.
Turkey and Spain emerged as the most popular countries, with Antalya, Palma de Mallorca, Istanbul, and London leading as the most frequented routes.
Return to Pre-Pandemic Numbers
“Reaching 10 million passengers post-pandemic represents a remarkable achievement,” notes Thilo Schmid, Chairman of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH.
“This success is particularly noteworthy given Germany’s high operational costs. This often leads airlines to favor other European destinations.”
“The growing numbers clearly demonstrate that travel enthusiasm remains strong, driving us to continuously expand our route network with airline partners.”
The airport’s commitment to route development has played a crucial role in attracting both leisure and business travelers throughout the year.

Consistent Recovery Trajectory
The airport’s recovery trajectory has shown consistent improvement since the pandemic’s end in 2022. Passenger numbers rose from 8.8 million in 2022 to 9.8 million in 2023, before exceeding 10 million in 2024 – a 3% increase.
This upward trend marks the first time since the airport’s consecutive five-year streak between 2015 and 2019 that passenger numbers have crossed this threshold.
However, current figures still fall short of pre-pandemic levels by approximately 2 million passengers. This gap can be attributed to two main factors: elevated government-imposed costs and a significant reduction in domestic German flights. Airlines operated notably fewer internal routes compared to 2019 levels.

Cargo Sector Retains Position
In the cargo sector, Cologne Bonn Airport has maintained its position as a leading European and German freight hub throughout 2024.
Despite facing numerous challenges including global economic uncertainties, international conflicts, and market volatility, the airport demonstrated remarkable resilience by handling approximately 840,000 tonnes of cargo.
While this represents a slight decrease from 2023’s 870,000 tonnes, it notably surpasses the 2019 figure of 815,000 tonnes.
“Our freight performance demonstrates the airport’s robust operational foundation even in challenging market conditions,” Schmid emphasizes, highlighting the facility’s ability to maintain strong cargo operations despite external pressures.

Attracting Passenger and Cargo Airlines
The airport’s strategic location and modern infrastructure continue to attract both passenger airlines and freight operators. Investment in digital technologies and sustainable practices has further enhanced its competitive position in the regional aviation market. These improvements, coupled with efficient operations and strong airline partnerships, have contributed to the airport’s recovery and growth potential.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead to 2025, the airport projects continued growth with an estimated 10.6 million passengers expected to pass through its terminals.
The cargo segment is also anticipated to strengthen, with volumes forecasted to reach 850,000 tonnes.
These projections reflect the airport’s confidence in sustaining its recovery trajectory and further establishing its position as a key transportation hub in Western Europe.
