Christchurch Airport to See Return of China Southern Airlines

Christchurch Airport has confirmed the return of China Southern Airlines in October 2024, with a stronger presence compared to summer 2023.

Christchurch Airport has now confirmed the return of China Southern Airlines in October. This marks an exciting development for South Island tourism, with the airline offering a significantly increased service compared to last summer.

China’s largest carrier will be operating five direct flights per week between Christchurch Airport and Guangzhou for a five-month period starting in late October.

This represents a substantial 52% capacity increase, reflecting the growing demand for travel between China and New Zealand’s South Island.

Return of China Southern Airlines

Gordon Beavan, Christchurch Airport’s General Manager of Aeronautical Development, expressed his enthusiasm about the renewed partnership with China Southern Airlines.

“We are committed to working closely with China Southern to provide a seamless travel experience for their passengers,” Beavan said.

“We understand the appeal of the South Island for Chinese travelers, particularly those seeking high-end experiences. This expanded service will cater to this growing interest and allow visitors to explore all that our region has to offer.”

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was recently signed between Christchurch Airport and China Southern Airlines. This agreement outlined shared goals for promoting the South Island during shoulder seasons.

The initiative aligns with the increasing popularity of winter sports among Chinese tourists, and the MOU aims to establish Christchurch as a premier ski destination.

“Our ultimate vision is for China Southern to offer year-round service to Christchurch,” Beavan concluded.

“The MOU also explores opportunities for growth in education, food safety, and high-value cargo transportation, further solidifying the strong partnership between Christchurch and China.”
