On September 26th, 2024, flight MU785 made history as it took off from Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 00:50 local time, destined for the city of Venice.

The new route, operated by China Eastern Airlines, will run three times per week, providing a timely solution for travelers planning their trips during the upcoming National Day holiday rush. The evening before the maiden voyage, Shanghai Airport Authority and China Eastern jointly hosted a grand inaugural ceremony at Pudong International Airport.
The event was attended by key figures from both countries. This notably included Mr. Yun QIN, Chairman of the Shanghai Airport Authority, and Mr. Qingchao WAN, Deputy General Manager of China Eastern. Also in attandance were Mr. Massimo Ambrosetti, Italian Ambassador to China, and Ms. Tiziana D’Angelo, Consul General of Italy in Shanghai.
During the ceremony, Mr. Yun QIN emphasized the longstanding commitment between Shanghai and Venice airports. He noted their aim to foster deeper cooperation through direct air links.
He stated, “The launch of this first non-stop air service between Shanghai and Venice will build a more convenient bridge in the air. It will allow for exchange and travel between our two countries.”
Impressive Growth and Future Prospects
Shanghai’s airports have shown remarkable growth in recent months. The airport group currently serves 112 international destinations across 48 countries. Together, they handled over 83 million passengers in the first eight months of the year. This represents a substantial 36% increase from the previous year.
A new record for daily passenger traffic was set on August 11, 2024. This further highlights the rapid recovery and expansion of international travel. Particularly noteworthy is the surge in inbound and outbound travel. This has seen a staggering 119% year-on-year increase, approaching 23 million passengers.
This growth underscores the increasing demand for international routes and the importance of expanding air connectivity.
China Eastern’s Global Ambitions
China Eastern Airlines, the operator of the new Shanghai-Venice route, has reiterated its commitment to strengthening its global route network.
Mr. Qingchao WAN expressed the airline’s ambition to become a world-class carrier with global competitiveness.
