In a positive development for Western Australian tourism and international trade, China Eastern Airlines is set to relaunch its non-stop service between Perth and Shanghai. The service resumption is now planned to commence in early 2025.

This seasonal offering will strengthen ties between Western Australia and mainland China. The panned resumption is timed to coincide with the bustling Chinese New Year holiday period.

Perth-Shanghai Flight Schedule

The renewed service will operate 10 flights between Perth Airport (PER) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). These will operate from January 24 to February 14, 2025.

China Eastern Airlines will utilize its widebody Airbus A330-200 aircraft for this route. The aircraft offers a total capacity of 4,640 seats over the three-week period. Each flight will accommodate 232 passengers, providing ample opportunity for travelers in both directions.

Perth Airport: Gateway to Western Australia

Perth Airport plays a crucial role in connecting Western Australia to the world. As the primary international gateway to the region, it serves as a vital hub for both business and leisure travelers.

The airport’s modern facilities and strategic location make it an ideal entry point for visitors exploring the diverse attractions of Western Australia.

Kate Holsgrove, Chief Commercial and Aviation Officer at Perth Airport gave comment on behalf of the airport. She emphasized the importance of expanding direct services between China and Western Australia. Holsgrove stated, “Growing direct services between China and Western Australia is a major focus for Perth Airport.”

This commitment aligns with the airport’s broader strategy to enhance international connectivity and support the local economy.

China Eastern Airlines: A Key Carrier

As one of China’s major carriers, China Eastern Airlines brings a wealth of experience in connecting global destinations.

The airline’s decision to resume this non-stop service demonstrates its continued confidence in the Perth-Shanghai route. It recognizes the sustained demand for direct links between Australia and China.

The choice of the A330-200 aircraft for this service ensures a comfortable and efficient journey for passengers. It balances capacity with the seasonal nature of the route.

Economic Impact and Tourism Growth

The resumption of this direct service will likely boost Western Australia’s economy significantly. Currently, approximately 66,000 Chinese visitors travel to Western Australia annually, contributing around $303 million to the local economy. Additional flights will likely increase these numbers substantially.

Ms. Holsgrove noted, “With additional flights, these numbers will undoubtedly grow, and that will benefit the entire economy.”

The increased air connectivity not only facilitates tourism but also enhances trade opportunities, particularly in terms of cargo capacity for key exports.

The China Eastern Airlines service is part of a broader trend of increasing air connections between Western Australia and Asia. Later in the year, China Southern Airlines will resume operations with three weekly flights to Guangzhou.

Additionally, Cathay Pacific plans to boost its service to Hong Kong, increasing from six to eleven flights per week.

These expanded services collectively contribute to Western Australia’s accessibility and appeal as a destination for Asian travelers. They also provide more options for local residents seeking direct connections to major Asian hubs.

Looking Ahead

Perth Airport, in collaboration with Tourism WA, continues to explore new market opportunities and enhance existing routes.

Ms. Holsgrove reaffirmed this commitment, stating, “The Perth Airport team, in partnership with Tourism WA, continues to explore new market opportunities. It is committed to delivering safe, convenient air services for the community in Western Australia.”

As Western Australia positions itself as a key destination for Chinese travelers and a vital link in the Australia-China relationship, the resumption of this direct service marks an important step forward.

It not only facilitates easier travel between the two countries but also opens up new possibilities for cultural exchange, business partnerships, and economic growth.
