China Airlines (CAL) has joined the ranks of global carriers embracing Boeing’s cutting-edge 777X family. Boeing has confirmed the placement of a firm order for 10 777-9 passenger jets and four 777-8 freighters by the airline.

Originally announced in March 2025, this order marks China Airlines as Taiwan’s first operator of the fuel-efficient 777X.

The deal, initially listed as unidentified on Boeing’s website, also includes options for five additional 777-9s and four 777-8 Freighters. This strategic move enhances the airline’s ability to serve long-haul routes to North America and Europe with greater capacity and efficiency.

Integration into Existing Fleet

China Airlines, a long-time operator of Boeing’s 777-300ER and 777 Freighter, is excited to integrate the 777X into its fleet.

“The 777-9’s advanced technology will elevate the passenger experience, while the 777-8 Freighter’s range and efficiency will strengthen our air cargo leadership,” said Kao Shing-Hwang, chairman of China Airlines. “This investment supports our sustainability goals and future growth.”

The 777-9, the world’s largest twin-engine jet, boasts 20% lower fuel consumption and emissions compared to its predecessors.

With a range of 7,295 nautical miles (13,510 km), it is capable of connecting long-haul destinations. At the same time, it offers the lowest operating cost per seat. Configured for 426 passengers in a typical two-class setup, the 777-9 provides a spacious cabin for enhanced comfort.

“The 777X will deliver a superior travel experience and unmatched reliability,” said Chen Han-Ming, president of China Airlines.

The 777-8 Freighter, meanwhile, offers payload capacity comparable to the 747 but with 30% better fuel efficiency and a noise footprint up to 60% smaller. Its interoperability with China Airlines’ existing Boeing freighters makes it a smart choice for fleet renewal.

A Long-Standing Partnership

Boeing and China Airlines share a nearly 60-year partnership, dating back to the 707 and 727. “We’re thrilled to welcome China Airlines to the 777X family,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing.

“We look forward to delivering these jets, adorned with the airline’s iconic plum blossom livery, in the coming years.”

The 777X program has attracted over 520 orders worldwide, supporting thousands of jobs at Boeing’s Everett, Washington, facility and across its supply chain.

“The 777-9 and 777-8 Freighter will help China Airlines expand capacity and drive growth,” said Dan Schull, Boeing’s vice president of Commercial Sales for Northeast Asia. The airline also has 787 Dreamliners on order, further modernizing its fleet.

Looking Ahead

China Airlines’ 777X order positions it for success in a competitive aviation landscape. By combining cutting-edge technology with sustainability, the airline is set to enhance passenger experiences and maintain its edge in air cargo. As deliveries begin, the 777X will play a pivotal role in shaping the airline’s future.
