Cathay Pacific is bolstering its seasonal Christchurch route, marking a significant boost for the New Zealand South Island’s tourism and trade.

This year, the airline will offer an impressive 88% increase in seat capacity compared to the previous season. The major capacity uplift signals a strong confidence in the region’s economic potential.

This expanded service streamlines travel for visitors from North Asia, Hong Kong, and beyond. It eliminates the need for complex domestic connections from Auckland.

Travelers can now enjoy a direct route that not only simplifies their journey but also leverages Cathay Pacific’s extensive global network to enhance tourism opportunities.

The route is strategically part of the Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific Joint Venture Alliance. This provides added value for Air New Zealand customers through Airpoints benefits. Passengers can now enjoy a convenient eleven-hour flight directly to Hong Kong, one of the world’s most significant aviation hubs, with seamless connections to over 80 international destinations.

The seasonal service will operate four flights per week from December to late February 2025, utilizing the spacious Airbus A350-1000. From March 2025, the airline will reduce to three weekly flights using the Airbus A350-900.

As well as the tourism aspect, the route presents substantial opportunities for South Island exporters. Christchurch Airport anticipates Cathay Pacific will transport approximately $100 million worth of freight during the season.

New Zealand’s cherry exports, which have doubled since 2020, will particularly benefit from the airline’s efficient cargo capabilities. This market is set to benefit, alongside other premium exports like meat and seafood.

Stakeholder Comments

Frosti Lau, Cathay Pacific’s Regional General Manager for Southwest Pacific, gave comment about the upgraded service. “Our previous seasonal route was highly successful, carrying over 16,000 customers primarily exploring Christchurch. This expanded service offers increased capacity and an extended timeframe, creating more opportunities for travelers and cargo.”

Lau highlighted the route’s comprehensive benefits, including strong connections to Europe via Hong Kong and an extensive network of Asian destinations. The service enables locals to visit family, enjoy holidays, and supports local suppliers in delivering fresh produce to Asian markets.

Justin Watson, Christchurch Airport’s Chief Executive, emphasized the economic significance of the move. “Tourism and trade are crucial to the South Island. Cathay Pacific’s increased capacity of over 40,000 seats will make a substantial difference”

“Each international passenger from Asia typically generates around 12 nights of accommodation, representing a significant financial boost to our tourism industry.”

This investment reflects a growing demand for international connectivity in the South Island, contributing to a 25% increase in seat capacity across Christchurch’s long-haul international routes this summer.
