Cathay Pacific has added Munich and Brussels to its European network as it looks to rebuild following its troubles. Services are due to be launched in the summer of 2025 and will mark a new era for the carrier, as it operates to Munich for the first time.
The inaugural flight is due to take place on June, 16, 2025 with a four-weekly service. The new route marks the airline’s second route to Germany alongside its daily service to Frankfurt. Both of the services will be operated by the airlines Airbus A350-900 aircraft, in the carriers tri-class layout.
Cathay Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau said: “We are very excited to be adding Munich to our network for the very first time as well as returning to Brussels next year, making these our 10th and 11th destinations in Europe, respectively.”
“Hong Kong is a world-class international financial, commercial and aviation hub, and these flights will provide our customers with a direct connection between our home city and two of Europe’s important centres.”
Part of Larger Plans To Rebuild
The routes are all apart of the airlines larger rebuild and growth plans, as it looks to have a route network of 100 destinations worldwide by the end of 2025. The airline also confirmed that in addition to the passenger services, it would be adding seven Cathay Cargo freighter flights per week to and from Europe in summer 2025.
Lau added: “Cathay Pacific has been flying non-stop to Europe for over four decades and we remain very committed to this important market.”
“In addition to launching these two routes, we are delighted to be adding more flights on our other European routes next summer, providing even greater choice and convenience for our customers travelling between Hong Kong and the continent.”
By the Summer of 2025, Cathay Pacific will be operating up to 93 return passenger flights per week to Europe, up from 78 flights per week currently operated. The expansion of the services also includes five times-daily flights to London, daily flights to Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Manchester, Milan, Paris and Zurich. With four-times weekly flights to each Madrid and Barcelona, with the later being a seasonal summer service.
Using the Third Runway To Full Advantage
Cathay Pacific is pushing for the new routes and services, following the completion of the third runway at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). The Three-Runway System will become a major strategic asset for Hong Kong. By increasing aviation capacity and efficiency, the system will attract more international airlines. It also supports economic recovery and growth, enhances global connectivity, and creates new opportunities for trade and tourism.
The third runway at Hong Kong airport, will allow the Cathay Group’s carriers – Cathay Pacific and HK Express – to continue with their return to pre-pandemic activity levels, with the group predicting it will reach 100 percent of pre-pandemic flight levels in January 2025.
The Cathay Group’s extensive network of destinations in Asia-Pacific via its home hub, include 19 destinations in the Chinese Mainland served by Cathay Pacific and low-cost carrier HK Express, offering European travellers more direct entry into the region.
