Cathay Pacific, a Hong Kong-based airline, has apologized for showing a “Family Guy” episode containing a Tiananmen Square joke. The episode from the animated TV series originally aired in 1999. It features a scene where Peter Griffin mentions “standing up to that tank in Tiananmen Square.”

Complaint Over In-Flight Entertainment Offering

Cathay Pacific Airways has found itself facing criticism following a recent in-flight incident involving a “Family Guy” episode that made a reference to the Tiananmen Square massacre.

In a cutaway, the main character Peter Griffin is depicted in a recreation of the iconic photograph depicting a lone man standing up to China’s military forces during pro-democracy protest.

The incident came to light when a passenger complained about the episode being included in the airline’s in-flight entertainment system.

Cathay Pacific Action and Apology

Cathay Pacific promptly apologized for the oversight and removed the episode from its entertainment library.

In a statement, the airline emphasized that the content did not reflect its stance and that it had taken immediate steps to rectify the situation by removing the program. It offered a sincere and apology to customers who may have been offended.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion and criticism, particularly in light of China’s sensitivity towards the Tiananmen Square massacre. The event, which occurred in 1989, remains a highly sensitive topic in China, with the government actively suppressing any mention or commemoration of it.

Summary

Cathay Pacific’s swift response and apology demonstrate the delicate balance airlines must strike when operating in the complex geopolitical landscape of East Asia.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of overlooking cultural sensitivities. This is particularly so in regions where political and historical events continue to cast a long shadow.

Moving forward, airlines may likely curate their in-flight entertainment offerings to avoid similar incidents. This may involve conducting thorough content reviews, consulting with local experts, and implementing robust quality control measures.

By taking proactive steps to address cultural sensitivities, airlines can mitigate risks and maintain positive relationships with passengers and stakeholders.
