Cargojet Freighter Returns to Cincinnati After Panel Detaches

A Cargojet 767-300 freighter bound for Vancouver made a precautionary return to Cincinnati (CVS) after a panel detached during departure on 17 June.

A Cargojet freighter operating from Cincinnati to Vancouver, Canada made a return to Cincinnati after a panel detached in flight on 17 June 2024.

Cargojet Airways flight W81926, a Boeing 767-300 (F) freighter had departed Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) from runway 27.

During the climb, the flight crew reported that the panel assembly had detached from the aircraft. Consequently, the elected to make a precautionary return to Cincinnati.

The climb procedure was terminated at FL250 (24,000 feet) and a direct return to the origin airport was initiated.

According to the online source The Aviation Herald, flight crew further advised during the descent that the aircraft’s speed brakes were inoperative. An S-turn was then effected to facilitate the descent without speed brakes.

An instrument approach was then conducted to runway 18C, and the aircraft landed safely without further incident. The aircraft was able to vacate the active runway in taxi and assisted to the apron area.

The specific panel assembly which detached from the aircraft has not been clarified. The incident will be the subject of an investigation by both the FAA and the NTSB.

Aircraft Details

The aircraft conducting the W81926 freighter service to Vancouver was a Boeing 767-300 (F) converted freighter aircraft, registered C-FCJU.

This is a 28 year old converted freighter aircraft belonging to the carrier Cargojet Airways. The aircraft has been operating in cargo configuration with the operator since its conversion in December 2022.

CargoJet Airways, also known as Cargojet Inc., is a Canadian scheduled cargo airline based in Mississauga, Ontario.

CargoJet offers cargo services across Canada and internationally. They also offer full aircraft charters for those who need to move a large amount of freight at once. Their main base is located at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. They also have secondary hubs located at:

  • Montréal–Mirabel International Airport
  • Vancouver International Airport

The operator’s fleet consists entirely of Boeing long-range freighters. This allows them to move over 25 million pounds of cargo each week to all major international destinations.
