Busiest U.S Airports: Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport

Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT), formerly known as Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, boasts a rich history intertwined with the aviation industry’s rise.

This bustling hub in Kansas serves as a testament to the state’s significant contribution to aerospace and a commitment to providing a smooth travel experience.

Taking Flight: The Early Days (1930s-1950s)

The story of ICT begins in the 1930s, a period marked by burgeoning interest in aviation.

Recognizing the need for a dedicated airport facility, the City of Wichita acquired land in 1935 and christened it “Wichita Municipal Airport.”

This initial airfield, primarily catering to general aviation, served as the foundation for future growth.

World War II proved to be a pivotal point.

The war spurred a national focus on aviation, and Wichita emerged as a key center for aircraft production.

Companies like Boeing and Cessna established a strong presence in the city, necessitating a larger and more modern airport.

In 1950, construction commenced on a brand-new facility located seven miles west of downtown Wichita.

The new airport, dedicated in 1954, boasted two runways and a terminal building designed to handle the burgeoning passenger traffic.

To reflect the city’s central role in the nation’s midsection, the airport was christened “Wichita Mid-Continent Airport.”

Mid-Continent Boom: The Rise of a Regional Hub (1960s-1990s)

The post-war era witnessed a surge in commercial air travel.

Mid-Continent Airport experienced a period of significant expansion, with airlines establishing new routes and passenger numbers steadily climbing.

The 1970s saw the construction of additional concourses and terminal facilities to accommodate the growing demand.

A crucial turning point came in 1973 when Kansas City International Airport adopted its current name.

This freed up the “Mid-Continent” moniker for Wichita’s airport, solidifying its identity within the aviation landscape.

The latter half of the 20th century saw Mid-Continent Airport solidify its position as a vital transportation hub for Kansas and the surrounding region.

Airlines like United Airlines and American Airlines established hubs at the airport, offering a wider range of destinations and connecting flights.

A New Era: Honoring a Legacy and Embracing Modernity (2000s-Present)

The turn of the millennium ushered in a new chapter for the airport.

In 2014, in recognition of Kansas native and 34th President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s contributions to the nation, the airport was officially renamed Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport.

This change not only honored a historical figure but also reflected the airport’s growing national significance.

The year 2015 marked another milestone with the opening of a brand new, two-story terminal.

The new terminal offered improved passenger amenities, enhanced security screenings, and a wider variety of dining and shopping options.

Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport has consistently received accolades for its excellent service and passenger experience.

In 2020 and 2023, USA Today’s Readers’ Choice poll ranked it as the 3rd Best Small Airport in the nation, recognizing its high percentage of on-time departures, passenger satisfaction with parking facilities and security checks, cleanliness, and car rental options.
