Buenos Aires-Bound Air France B787-9 Declares Emergency and Returns to Paris

An Air France Boeing 787-9 operating flight AF412 bound for Ezeiza, Buenos Aires declared an emergency and returned to Paris on 25 December.

An Air France Boeing 787-9 bound for Ezeiza, Buenos Aires declared an emergency and returned to Paris on 25 December 2024.

Air France flight AF412 was being operated by a Boeing 787-9. It had conducted a departure from Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG). The aircraft was carrying out a scheduled service to Ezeiza International Airport (EZE), Buenos Aires.

The aircraft, having passed the west coast of France and flying on flight plan track at cruising altitude, declared an emergency. Flight crew transmitted squawk code 7700 before discontinuing the outbound service.

The operating crew entered a holding pattern over the Bay of Biscay to permit fuel dumping, before they carried out a return to Paris.

The nature of the emergency prompting the precautionary return to the origin airport is not yet known.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight AF412 had made an on-time departure from Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport on 25 December. The aircraft shows an actual time of departure of 1032 local time.

Following the departure, flight crew had set course normally, climbing to flight level FL330 for the south-westerly service to Ezeiza, Buenos Aires.

The flight crew then squawked transponder code 7700 at 1038 UTC, just after the aircraft left cruising flight at FL330.

A brief period of holding was then carried out at FL300, for the purpose of fuel dumping. A direct return to the origin airport was then carried out.

The aircraft conducting the AF412 service to Ezeiza International Airport was a Boeing 787-9, registered F-HRBB. This is a 7.8 year old wide-body aircraft belonging to the national carrier Air France. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in April 2017.
