British Airways has announced a multi-million pound investment in its engineering maintenance facility at Cardiff Airport.

British Airways is making a significant investment in its Cardiff-based engineering facility, British Airways Maintenance Cardiff (BAMC).

This multi-million-pound commitment will enable BAMC to expand its capabilities and accommodate larger, long-haul aircraft like the Airbus A350.

BAMC Cardiff Airport

British Airways Maintenance Cardiff (BAMC) is a major aircraft maintenance facility located at Cardiff Airport in Wales. It’s a wholly-owned subsidiary of British Airways and a key part of British Airways Engineering.

  • Heavy Maintenance: BAMC specializes in heavy maintenance for the carrier’s long-haul fleet, including Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft.
  • Complex Repairs: The facility is equipped to handle complex repair and modification work.
  • Technical Support: BAMC provides technical support and expertise to other parts of British Airways Engineering.

The investment will see the expansion of one of BAMC’s existing maintenance bays. This will increase the facility’s flexibility and allow it to handle more complex maintenance tasks.

By 2026, BAMC will have two fully flexible bays, enabling it to service a wider range of aircraft types, including Boeing 777, 787, and Airbus A350 models.

British Airways Broader Transformation Plan

This expansion aligns with the national carrier’s broader £7 billion transformation plan. The airline aims to improve efficiency and customer experience across its operations.

By investing in its maintenance infrastructure, the national carrier is ensuring that its aircraft fleet remains in prime condition. The investment in BAMC is also a testament to the importance of the Cardiff facility to the airline’s global operations.

The facility employs 480 skilled workers and contributes significantly to the Welsh economy. By expanding its capabilities, BAMC will further strengthen its position as a leading aerospace maintenance hub.

Andy Best, British Airways’ Chief Technical Officer, expressed his enthusiasm for the investment. “Our Cardiff engineering base is a vital part of our maintenance operations. This investment will ensure its continued success, allowing us to efficiently maintain our long-haul fleet.”

Rebecca Evans, Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy, and Planning, welcomed the news. “This investment highlights Cardiff Airport’s role in attracting investment to Wales and growing our aerospace industry. It’s a testament to the skilled workforce in Wales and the potential for future growth in the sector.”

The expansion of BAMC is not just a boost for British Airways, but also for the wider aerospace industry in Wales. It demonstrates the region’s ability to attract significant investment and create high-skilled jobs. As the aviation industry continues to evolve, BAMC is well-positioned to meet the challenges of the future.

With this investment, the carrier is signaling its long-term commitment to Cardiff and its role as a global aviation hub. The expansion of BAMC will enhance the airline’s operational efficiency, improve customer satisfaction, and contribute to the economic growth of Wales.
