A British Airways flight from London Gatwick to Sharm el-Sheikh suffered an emergency situation onboard, prompting a diversion to Venice.

British Airways flight BA2814 is a routine scheduled flight between London Gatwick and Sharm el-Sheikh.

Furthermore, the aircraft involved in the incident was G-GATL.

As per data from Planespotters.net, G-GATL is a 22.4 year old Airbus A320ceo, or current engine option aircraft.

It started out life with ACES Colombia back in January 2003.

The aircraft was handed over back to debis AirFinance a year later, before being sent to Wizz Air in August 2004.

British Airways eventually took delivery of the aircraft in November 2014.

This aircraft is part of the BA Euroflyer subsidiary, which exclusively operates flights out of London Gatwick.

British Airways flight BA2814, which suffered the emergency in Venice, departed London Gatwick at 0859 local time on December 23rd.

It initially tracked south-easterly towards Sharm el-Sheikh, as per AirNav Radar.

Over Italian airspace, the crew declared an emergency utilising the 7700 squawk code.

This is the universal sign for an aircraft in distress.

From there, the aircraft descended rapidly, with the choice of Venice as the diversion airport identified.

After just two hours and 18 minutes in the air, Emergency British Airways flight BA2814 performed a safe emergency landing into Venice.

What Was The Cause?

As per @FlightEmergency on X, it is understood the cause of the emergency onboard British Airways flight BA2814 London Gatwick to Sharm el-Sheikh was due to a passenger-related incident.

It is understood that a few passengers became unwell due to skin and respiratory irritation.

Moreover, information is still limited surrounding the severity of this irritation.

Data from AirNav Radar highlights that the aircraft involved in the incident, G-GATL, is expected to position back to London Gatwick. It is unclear whether this flight will have the stranded passengers onboard or not.
