British Airways Flight BA866 London-Budapest Declares Emergency

British Airways flight BA866 bound for Budapest has declared an emergency and is currently returning to London Heathrow.

A British Airways A319-100 operating from London to Budapest has declared an emergency and is currently on return to London.

British Airways flight BA866 declared the emergency with squawk code 7700 whilst passing out of UK airspace, and has initiated a direct return.

Having declared an emergency whilst outbound in the Dover region, flight BA866 has now expedited a return to London Heathrow Airport (LHR). The problem leading to the emergency declaration is not yet known.

Flight crew squawked transponder code 7700 at 0822 local time whilst on climb through FL260 (26,000 feet). The operating crew terminated the climb and initiated a direct return to the origin airport.

Having expedited a return, flight BA866 is now on descent below 5,000 feet under vectoring for an approach to RWY09 London Heathrow. Flight crew have now returned to a normal squawk code with the aircraft passing through 4,000 feet on the approach.

Weather for the flight’s return is MVFR, with 2,000 foot cloud base and visibility 10 kilometres or more.

Having declared an emergency whilst outbound for Budapest Airport (BUD) earlier this morning, flight BA866 has now returned to London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

The aircraft conducting this morning’s BA866 service to Budapest was an Airbus A319-100, registered G-EUPG. This is a 24.4 year old narrowbody aircraft belong to the national carrier British Airways. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in May 2000.
