British Airways Flight BA294 Chicago-London Declares Emergency

British Airways flight BA294, a B777-200 inbound from Chicago to London, has declared an emergency, squawking code 7700 en route.

A British Airways flight inbound from Chicago has declared an emergency whilst crossing Northern Ireland airspace en route to London.

British Airways flight BA294, a Boeing 777-200 inbound from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, declared a general emergency with transponder code 7700.

Flight BA294 squawked transponder code 7700 at 05:36 UTC from cruising flight at FL380. The flight has now reverted to a normal squawk code and appears to be continuing on flight plan track for London Heathrow Airport.

The flight is currently maintaining flight plan track and maintaining cruising altitude FL380 as it approaches the northern English coast inbound.

British Airways flight BA294, operated by a Boeing 777-200ER registered G-VIIN, had made an on-time departure out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Actual departure time was logged as 17:45 local time on 9 March. The aircraft is a 26.6 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the national carrier British Airways.

The flight had then set course normally, climbing to FL380 for the transatlantic crossing. The flight proceeded normally, before the operating crew squawked emergency transponder code 7700 at 05:36 UTC. Flight crew then reverted to normal squawk code at 05:51 UTC, indicating the emergency situation may now be under control.

Proceeding under normal squawk code, flight BA294 has now commenced descent for London as it passes the British midlands.

Flight BA294 is now passing through FL130 as it continues its approach for London Heathrow (LHR).

Having declared an emergency whilst en route from Chicago earlier this morning, British Airways flight BA294 has now made a landing under normal operating procedures at the destination London Heathrow Airport (LHR). the reason for the earlier declaration is not yet known.
