British Airways 777 Washington-London Makes Emergency Landing in Boston

In the last hour or two, a British Airways Boeing 777 bound for London from Washington via the BA216 service had to make an emergency landing in Boston.

In the last hour or two, a British Airways Boeing 777 bound for London from Washington via the BA216 service had to make an emergency landing in Boston.

Information has been released pertinent to the incident at hand.

British Airways BA216 Washington to London…


In the last hour or two, a British Airways Boeing 777 bound for London from Washington via the BA216 service had to make an emergency landing in Boston.

British Airways flight BA216, which made the emergency landing in Boston, is a routine scheduled flight between Washington and London Heathrow.

Furthermore, the aircraft involved in the incident was G-STBD.

As per data from Planespotters.net, G-STBD is a 13.6 year old Boeing 777-300ER that was delivered to the airline back in October 2011.

Of the 777-300ER variant, British Airways has 16 of them in their fleet.

Moreover, of that 16, all but one are in active service, with an average fleet age of 10.6 years.

British Airways flight BA216, the Boeing 777 which declared the emergency in Boston, departed Washington Dulles at 1803 local time on April 26th bound for London Heathrow.

It is understood that the aircraft was able to initially reach it’s cruising altitude before the issues were identified onboard.

From there, a decision was made to divert to Boston.

After over an hour in the air, the aircraft made a safe landing into Logan Airport without further incident.

Reason Revealed for the 777 Emergency in Boston…

It is understood that the cause for the emergency landing in Boston by British Airways flight BA216 Washington-London was caused by a bird strike.

As per @FlightEmergency on X, it is understood this bird strike caused engine vibrations.

Furthermore, this is understood to have resulted in the diversion to Boston.

On top of this, it has supposedly caused a smoke in the cabin situation as noted in an FAA statement:

“British Airways Flight 216 landed safely at Boston Logan International Airport around 7:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, April 26, after the crew reported a possible bird strike and fumes in the cabin.”

“The Boeing 777 departed Dulles International Airport and was headed to Heathrow Airport in London.”

“The FAA will investigate.”
