British Airways 777 London to Bangkok Declares Emergency

British Airways flight BA2231, a B777-200ER bound for Bangkok, has declared an emergency and is returning to London Gatwick.

A British Airways Boeing 777-200ER bound for Bangkok from London Gatwick had declared an emergency not long after departure.

British Airways flight BA2231 declared an emergency, squawking code 7700 as it passed over Belgian airspace outbound for Bangkok. The flight is now making an emergency return to London Gatwick.

Flight BA2231 has expedited a return to the departure airport and is now on approach passing below 10,000 feet as it returns to London Gatwick Airport (LGW). The nature of the emergency prompting the early return is not yet known.

The flight was a scheduled service bound for Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).

British Airways flight BA2231 is passing 3,000 feet in the final stages of its approach to London Gatwick. Flight crew are maintaining emergency transponder code 7700 for a priority landing.

Having declared an emergency whilst outbound for Bangkok earlier this evening, British Airways flight BA2231 has now landed after returning to the departure airport London Gatwick.

According to the online source Flight Emergency, British Airways flight BA2231 declared an emergency after reporting an electrical burning odour in the cabin.

Flight data shows that flight BA2231 had made an on-time departure from London Gatwick at 21:08 UTC this evening. The flight had then set course normally for Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. Flight crew had then terminated the climb procedure at FL290 as the flight passed through Belgian airspace.

The operating crew then squawked transponder code 7700 at 22:12 UTC, approximately one hour into the long haul flight to Thailand. A direct return to the departure airport was then carried out.

The aircraft conducting this evening’s BA2231 service was a Boeing 777-200ER, registered G-YMMF. This is a 24.9 year old widebody aircraft belonging to British Airways.
