In the last few moments, a British Airways Boeing 777 operating BA82 between Abuja and London has declared an emergency.
Also, G-VIIL is the aircraft involved in the incident.

UPDATE #1 @ 1325 UK time – The aircraft is cruising at FL400 over French airspace.

UPDATE #2 @ 1328 UK time – The Boeing 777 has started it’s descent into Heathrow.
EMERGENCY UPDATE #3 @ 1328 UK time – G-VIIL is the aircraft involved.
As per Planespotters, G-VIIL is a 27.1 year old Boeing 777-200 that was delivered to the airline back in March 1998.
Also, of the 777-200 variant, the UK carrier has 43 of them in their fleet.
Moreover, of that 43, all but three are in active service, with an average fleet age of 25.1 years.
UPDATE #3 @ 1332 UK time – The British Airways Boeing 777 operating BA82 Abuja-London has changed it’s squawk code from the emergency 7700 code to 4005.
Furthermore, we will continue to monitor the aircraft until it’s arrival.

UPDATE #4 @ 1338 UK time – The aircraft has entered UK airspace, descending through FL180.
Furthermore, at this stage, it is unclear what the reason for the original emergency broadcast is.

UPDATE #5 @ 1342 UK time – BA82 is descending through FL100.
The Boeing 777 is getting closer to London Heathrow.
UPDATE #6 @ 1618 UK time – We have an update regarding the reason for this emergency.
As per @FlightEmergency on X, it is understood this was due to an indication of smoke in the crew rest area.

UPDATE #6 @ 1348 UK time – BA82 appears to be deviating, and looks to be burning altitude as quickly as possible.

UPDATE #7 @ 1350 UK time – BA82 is now on base into Heathrow.

EMERGENCY UPDATE #8 @ 1352 UK time – BA82 is now on final into Heathrow, landing expected imminently.

UPDATE #9 @ 1358 UK time – TOUCHDOWN!
Emergency British Airways flight BA82 from Abuja has appeared to have landed safely into London Heathrow.
At this stage, the reason for the initial 7700 declaration is unclear.
As soon as we have more information pertinent to this, we will update you accordingly.
For now, this remains a developing story pending additional updates that may come through.
