Brisbane Airport’s International Terminal is set for a revolutionary transformation as part of the ambitious $5 billion Future BNE project.

This extensive renovation marks the most significant changes to the terminal since its inauguration 29 years ago. It will further position Brisbane as a world-class aviation hub for the future.

The driving force behind this massive overhaul is the need to upgrade security screening equipment to meet stringent Australian Government standards by the end of 2025.

However, Brisbane Airport Corporation is seizing this opportunity to reimagine the entire passenger experience from the ground up.

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff underscores the importance of this project: “Our International Terminal is Queensland’s gateway to the world.”

“After three decades of exemplary service, it’s high time for a transformation to ensure we’re ready to welcome global travelers for years to come. This facility is worth billions to Queensland‘s tourism economy and job market annually.”

$5 Billion BNE Transformation

The International Terminal revamp is just one piece of the larger $5 billion Future BNE transformation. This decade-long initiative encompasses upgrades to the Domestic Terminal, the construction of a brand-new Terminal 3, and extensive commercial, retail, and industrial projects across the entire airport precinct.

One of the most notable changes in the International Terminal will be the relocation of security screening and passport control. Currently situated in the windowless center of Level 3, these crucial functions will move to the light-filled atrium on Level 4.

This shift promises to provide passengers and staff with a brighter, naturally-lit space that better reflects Queensland’s vibrant atmosphere.

New Screening Technology

The heart of the security upgrade lies in the introduction of next-generation Computed Tomography (CT) screening technology for both passengers and baggage. This advanced equipment offers several key benefits:

  1. Enhanced convenience: Passengers can leave laptops and other electronic devices in their bags, streamlining the screening process.
  2. Reduced wait times: The new technology significantly speeds up the screening process, minimizing queue times.
  3. Improved accuracy: CT scanners provide 3D images of bags, increasing screening precision and reducing the need for rescreening.

De Graaff highlights the passenger-centric approach: “Travelers will enjoy a hassle-free experience with the new screening system. Keeping laptops and electronics in bags makes the process faster, smoother, and more accurate.”

The scale of this technological upgrade is impressive. Brisbane Airport’s deployment of Rapiscan Systems equipment is among the largest in Southeast Asia. It features 33 CT cabin baggage scanners, 10 checked baggage scanners, 41 explosive trace detection units, and 33 advanced body scanners.

Beyond security, the terminal transformation extends to the check-in experience. New self-service kiosks and bag drop facilities, powered by Amadeus technology, will greet passengers as they enter the upgraded terminal.

“The first new-generation check-in row is already operational, and the feedback from both travelers and airline staff has been overwhelmingly positive,” de Graaff notes. “It’s a quantum leap from the 1990s to the present day.”

Electric Ground Support Equipment

A network of charging infrastructure will be installed to support electric ground support equipment, including pushback tugs, belt loaders, and baggage tugs. This initiative not only reduces the airport’s carbon footprint but also creates a quieter work environment for ground staff and a more pleasant experience for passengers.

Recognizing the challenges of renovating an active airport, the project team has meticulously planned the construction in 20 distinct phases. This approach aims to minimize disruptions while maintaining the terminal’s capacity to handle up to 20,000 international passengers daily.

De Graaff acknowledges the complexity: “As anyone who has renovated a house knows, construction comes with challenges. But we’re working tirelessly to keep impacts to a minimum while remaining fully operational. We’re confident the end result will be worth the wait.”

Conclusion

The timing of this transformation couldn’t be better. In the 2024 fiscal year, the International Terminal welcomed 5.6 million passengers, marking a robust 39% increase from the previous year.

With new international routes on the horizon, including direct flights to Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Manila, and Bangkok, Brisbane Airport is positioning itself as a key player in the global aviation landscape.

As the project moves forward, the legacy of the International Terminal continues to grow. Having served 110 million passengers since its opening, this vital infrastructure is poised to play an even more crucial role in Queensland’s economic future. The uprated facility will connect the Sunshine State to the world for decades to come.
