Bournemouth Airport has marked a milestone, welcoming its millionth passenger for 2024. This caps off a remarkable year of growth for the airport, with even bigger plans on the horizon for 2025.

The special moment was celebrated when lucky traveller Lisa Gray, arriving with her partner Paul from Faro, Portugal, received an unexpected surprise.

Champagne and flowers were presented by the airport’s leadership team, including Managing Director Steve Gill and Customer Service Director Cathy Hicks.

Bournemouth’s Transformation Since Privatisation

The achievement reflects the airport’s successful transformation since its privatisation in 2017, when Regional and City Airports acquired it from Manchester Airports Group.

The celebration took place in the recently renovated arrivals hall, which forms part of the airport’s ongoing modernization program.

“We couldn’t be happier with Bournemouth Airport,” shared Lisa. “Living just three miles away makes it our perfect local choice – it’s incredibly convenient and the staff are wonderfully friendly.”

Her experience echoes the growing sentiment among travellers from Dorset, Hampshire, and Wiltshire who increasingly choose Bournemouth for its accessibility and efficiency.

Higher Numbers Predicted for 2025

This milestone marks the first time since 2008 that annual passenger numbers have exceeded one million. The summer season proved particularly successful, with 840,210 travellers passing through between April and October – nearly 103,000 more than the previous year.

The airport’s management is already preparing for even higher numbers in 2025, with predictions suggesting passenger figures could reach 1.5 million.

“Bournemouth Airport is rapidly establishing itself as the south coast’s leading aviation hub and a fantastic alternative to London’s busy airports,” commented Steve Gill, Managing Director.

“We’re seeing growing recognition of the benefits of flying locally, and with our expansion plans in motion, passengers can look forward to even more destination choices next year.”

Developments Driving Expansion

Originally established in 1941 as RAF Hurn, the airport has evolved significantly over the decades. Today, its 2,271-meter runway can accommodate aircraft up to the size of Boeing 787s and Airbus A330s, making it capable of handling long-haul operations.

The airport’s strategic location, serving a catchment area of over 3.5 million people across southern England, positions it perfectly for continued growth.

Several key developments are driving this impressive expansion.

TUI has doubled its presence by stationing a second aircraft at the airport, adding 60,000 extra seats this summer. Their increased commitment includes new routes to popular Mediterranean destinations and expanded frequency on existing services.

Ryanair continues to expand its network, now offering 23 routes including new services to Crete, Rhodes, and Fuerteventura. The airline’s growth reflects strong demand for both leisure and business travel from the region.

Jet2 is set to make its debut, launching 20 new routes from February 2025, serving popular spots across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Canary Islands. This major development represents one of the largest route expansions in the airport’s history.

Airport Improvement Program

To accommodate this growth, Regional and City Airports are implementing a multi-million-pound improvement program. This includes terminal upgrades, enhanced security facilities, and expanded parking facilities. These investments reinforce Bournemouth’s position as a preferred regional travel hub.

Beyond its passenger services, the airport employs approximately 300 people and serves as a vital cargo centre for e-commerce. It also supports regional aviation through pilot training, military operations, and aircraft maintenance services.

The adjacent Aviation Business Park, spanning 200 acres, hosts more than 200 companies. Comprising both national and international operations, it contributes significantly to the local economy.
