Boeing 777-9 Takes Off on Certification Test Flights

A second certification flight test of the Boeing 777-9 aircraft has been conducted today from Boeing Field, Seattle with FAA officials on board.

The Boeing 777-X program, a much-anticipated upgrade to Boeing’s long-haul workhorse, has reached a critical milestone.

On 12 July 2024, the first Boeing 777-9 certification test flight took off with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on board.

Boeing carried out the second FAA certification test flight today, 17 July. Test aircraft WH003/ N779XY took to the skies for the purpose of airspeed calibration testing.

Boeing has indicated in a recent post that the aircraft has received its Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) during today’s test flight.

The TIA, which is granted by the FAA, is an important step in the certification process of a new aircraft.

The grant of the TIA allows Boeing to conduct further specific flight tests with FAA participation to gather necessary data for certification.

This marks a significant step towards obtaining official approval for the aircraft.

Certification Flights: A Stringent Process

These certification flights involve rigorous testing with FAA representatives observing the aircraft’s performance first-hand.

The goal is to ensure the 777-9 meets all safety and performance standards mandated by the FAA. This signifies a separate phase from Boeing’s internal flight testing program, which has been underway for some time.

The certification process is comprehensive and takes several months to complete. If everything goes according to plan, Boeing anticipates the 777-9 entering service by 2025.

The 777-9: A Worthy Successor

The 777-9 boasts several improvements over its predecessor, the 777-300ER. It offers an extended flying range, allowing airlines to connect previously distant routes more efficiently.

Passenger capacity is also increased, with the 777-9 capable of seating up to 426 passengers in a comfortable configuration.

Initial Setbacks Overcome

The 777-X program faced delays due to heightened scrutiny from the FAA following the 737 Max grounding.

However, Boeing has addressed these concerns, and the certification process appears to be back on track.

The successful commencement of certification flights signifies positive progress for the 777-X program. With its impressive range and passenger capacity, the 777-9 is poised to become a valuable asset for airlines worldwide.

Boeing is now near to securing a significant sale of 777X jets to Korean Air, with the deal potentially involving 20 to 30 aircraft.
