Birmingham Airport (BHX) has reappointed National Air Traffic Services (NATS) as its air traffic service provider on a 10-year contract.
In 2025, NATS will take over the air traffic and associated engineering service, which has been run in-house for the past decade. With the changeover, the airport’s controllers, assistants and air traffic engineers will transfer over to NATS after a 12-month transition period.
BHX: New Air Traffic Management
Birmingham Airport marks a milestone in its development strategy with a new 10-year partnership with NATS, the UK’s leading air traffic service provider. This strategic alliance, set to commence in 2025, represents a major step forward in the airport’s ambitious growth plans.
After managing its air traffic services in-house for the past decade, Birmingham Airport has chosen NATS following a comprehensive competitive tender process.
This transition will see all current air traffic controllers, assistants, and engineering personnel transfer to NATS’ employment following a carefully planned 12-month transition period.
Investment and Growth Plans
The partnership aligns with Birmingham Airport’s bold vision to establish itself among Europe’s premier aviation hubs.
To support this goal, the airport has committed to a substantial £300 million investment program over the next decade. These funds will drive significant improvements across both terminal facilities and airfield infrastructure. It will prepare BHX to handle an anticipated passenger volume of 18 million by 2033.
Innovation and Technology Focus
NATS will play a crucial role in developing a comprehensive technology and innovation roadmap for the airport.
This strategic planning will ensure that air traffic services can effectively and safely manage the projected increase in capacity while supporting the airport’s expansion plans into the 2030s.
