Bahrain International Airport (BIA) recently completed a review of its Wildlife Hazard Management Programme.
The Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) undertook the study in partnership with Avisure Ltd., a leading aviation wildlife management consultancy. It marks a move towards effective risk management at the major airport hub.
A Three-Pronged Approach to Safety
The comprehensive assessment program consists of three evaluations. The first evaluation took place in July 2023, followed by a second in January 2024, and the most recent in July 2024.
This ongoing process demonstrates BAC’s commitment to continually improving safety measures at BIA.
The program evaluation included a detailed Wildlife Hazard Assessment (WHA). This assessment comprised several key components.
First, it involved extensive wildlife surveys to identify and catalog the species present in and around the airport.
Second, it included a thorough review of existing wildlife management practices to assess their effectiveness. Lastly, it conducted an audit against various regulations and standards to ensure compliance.
The WHA involved three site visits to BIA. During these visits, Avisure carried out several crucial tasks. They began by conducting a gap analysis of the existing program, which had been established in 2018.
This analysis helped identify areas for improvement and optimization. Next, they updated the species risk assessment, considering any changes in local wildlife populations or behavior.
Finally, they delivered specialized training to key BAC personnel, ensuring that staff were equipped with the latest knowledge and techniques in wildlife management.
Adhering to International Standards
The assessment ensures compliance with a range of important standards and regulations. It adheres to the Kingdom of Bahrain Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) regulations, which set the national benchmark for aviation safety.
Additionally, it complies with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 14 requirements, which provide international standards and recommended practices for airport design and operations.
The assessment also considers other relevant international standards, ensuring that BIA’s wildlife management practices are in line with global best practices.
Wildlife Management at Airports
Bird strikes pose a significant threat to aviation safety worldwide. When birds collide with aircraft, particularly during takeoff or landing, the consequences can be severe.
These incidents can lead to engine damage, potentially causing engine failure in extreme cases. Cracked windshields are another common result of bird strikes, which can impair pilot visibility. In some cases, bird strikes can cause structural damage to the aircraft, compromising its integrity.
In the most extreme scenarios, bird strikes can lead to loss of aircraft control, putting the lives of passengers and crew at risk.
The Federal Aviation Administration reports thousands of wildlife strikes annually, underscoring the critical importance of effective wildlife management programs at airports.
These statistics highlight the ongoing need for airports to remain vigilant and proactive in their approach to wildlife management.
Bahrain International Airport
Bahrain International Airport, located in Muharraq, serves as the primary hub for Gulf Air. The airport has undergone significant modernization in recent years, positioning itself as a state-of-the-art facility.
A new passenger terminal has been constructed, enhancing the traveler experience with modern amenities and efficient design.
The airport has also improved its cargo facilities, boosting its capacity to handle international freight. Furthermore, upgrades to runways and taxiways have been implemented, allowing for smoother aircraft operations and increased capacity.
These upgrades, coupled with the enhanced Wildlife Hazard Management Programme, position BIA as a leader in aviation safety and efficiency in the Gulf region.
The airport’s commitment to modernization also encompasses critical safety measures, creating a holistic approach to airport management.
Summary
The increasing frequency of flights and the expansion of airport operations worldwide make it more critical than ever to manage wildlife risks effectively.
Bahrain International Airport’s commitment to this critical aspect of aviation safety sets a commendable example for airports worldwide.
BAC’s comprehensive review of its Wildlife Hazard Management Programme represents a significant investment in the safety and efficiency of Bahrain International Airport.
By leveraging expert knowledge and adhering to international standards, BIA is well-positioned to meet the challenges of modern aviation while ensuring the safety of passengers, crew, and aircraft.
This initiative not only enhances the airport’s safety record but also contributes to the overall advancement of aviation safety practices in the region and beyond.
