Avianca Cargo, a top cargo carrier in Latin America, achieved a historic milestone during the Mother’s Day 2025 season.

The airline transported over 20,100 tons of fresh flowers, a 15% increase from the previous year.

These shipments, originating in Colombia and Ecuador, reached homes across North America and Europe, spreading joy for the special occasion.

Avianca Cargo Market Dominance

This success cements Avianca Cargo’s position as the leading flower carrier from Colombia to the United States. It also highlights the airline’s dominance in the global flower transportation market.

To meet the seasonal surge, Avianca Cargo doubled its operational capacity, expanded key infrastructure, and provided round-the-clock flower services at strategic terminals.

These efforts ensured seamless operations without impacting other cargo activities.

“Mother’s Day is a critical time for the flower industry,” said Diogo Elias, CEO of Avianca Cargo. “We’re thrilled to celebrate this record-breaking season, which strengthens our leadership as the top flower carrier between Colombia and the U.S. This milestone reflects the hard work of our team, partners, and clients.”

Key Achievements in Logistics and Operations

Avianca Cargo’s Mother’s Day success relied on robust logistics and infrastructure:

24/7 Operations: The airline maintained non-stop flower reception during peak season.

300 Dedicated Flights: Over 20,100 tons of flowers were transported via exclusive flower flights.

With more than 50 years of experience, Avianca Cargo demonstrated its expertise in perishable goods. The airline exported a wide variety of flowers, including carnations, pompons, chrysanthemums, and gypsophila.

This season’s 15% growth compared to Mother’s Day 2024 underscores the carrier’s ability to scale efficiently.

Miami: The Heart of Flower Imports

Miami served as the primary gateway for flower imports into the United States. As the main hub, Miami International Airport (MIA) handled over 85% of Avianca Cargo’s 150,300 tons of flowers transported in 2024.

To support this volume, the airline increased its Miami workforce by 30%. This bolstered Miami’s role as the central entry point for Colombian and Ecuadorian flowers, driving efficient nationwide distribution.

Miami’s economic impact is significant. “More than 1,000 tons of flowers arrive at MIA daily in the weeks before Mother’s Day,” said Ralph Cutié, MIA Director and CEO. “Nine out of 10 flowers imported to the U.S. pass through MIA, making it our largest imported product.”

“Flowers account for nearly 380,000 tons annually, valued at $1.8 billion. Congratulations to Avianca Cargo for its record-breaking season, contributing to another stellar year for MIA’s cargo volume.”

Leadership in Perishable Transport

Avianca Cargo was the first airline in the Americas to earn CEIV Fresh certification, a testament to its expertise in handling perishables, which make up over 50% of its cargo.

Transporting flowers requires precision, including strict temperature control and risk analysis to ensure blooms arrive fresh. These processes are critical to maintaining quality across the supply chain.

Avianca Cargo continues to invest in innovation, sustainability, and service excellence. The carrier is seeing strengthened partnerships and expanding capacity, which bodes well for future growth.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Raquel Regalado explained the broader impact. “Nearly every flower given to a mother or grandmother in the U.S. passes through Miami and Avianca Cargo. This partnership, supported by strong infrastructure, is something we celebrate.”

Avianca Cargo’s record-breaking Mother’s Day 2025 season highlights its leadership in the floral industry.

With a focus on operational efficiency and customer satisfaction, the airline sets a standard for perishable goods transportation worldwide.
