Images have emerged from an incident last weekend involving an Avianca Boeing 787 originally bound for Medellin which suffered a cracked windshield in Madrid.
Information has been released pertinent to this incident, which we will detail in this article.

Avianca Flight AV17 – Madrid to Medellin…
Avianca flight AV17, which suffered the cracked windshield, is a routine scheduled flight between Madrid & Medellin.
The aircraft involved in the incident was N785AV.
As per data from Planespotters.net, N785AV is a 8.8 year old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that was delivered to the airline in October 2015.
Of the 787-8 variant, the Colombian carrier has 14 of them in the fleet.
Furthermore, within that 14, all but one are in active service, with an average fleet age of 8.5 years.
As well as the Boeing 787, Avianca has the following other aircraft in their mainline fleet:
- 7 Airbus A319s.
- 103 Airbus A320s.
Avianca flight AV17 departed Madrid at 1723 local time on July 7 and initially climbed out towards Medellin.
The Aviation Herald reports that the cracked windshield incident occurred as the aircraft was climbing through FL280.
From there, data from RadarBox shows the aircraft deviating south and entering a series of holds to get the incident under control.
After those holds were completed, the aircraft made a return back to the airport, where it landed safely without further incident at 1847 local time.
Repairs Still in Progress: Aircraft Still Grounded…
Following the incident of the cracked windshield involving Avianca flight AV17 Madrid-Medellin, N785AV, the Boeing 787, remains grounded.
We are now entering the third day that the aircraft has been on the ground and out of service.
At this stage, it is unclear how much longer it will take to replace the windshield, as the extent of the damage shows a replacement will be needed.
