Avianca 787 Madrid-Medellin Declares Emergency

In the last hour or so, an Avianca Boeing 787 bound for Medellin declared an emergency not long after departure from Madrid.

In the last hour or so, an Avianca Boeing 787 operating flight AV17 bound for Medellin declared an emergency not long after departure from Madrid.

Information is limited surrounding the incident, but below is what we know on the incident so far.

Avianca Flight AV17: Madrid to Medellin…


In the last hour or so, an Avianca Boeing 787 bound for Medellin declared an emergency not long after departure from Madrid.

Avianca flight AV17, which declared the emergency, is a routine scheduled flight between Madrid and Medellin.

Furthermore, the aircraft involved in the incident was N795AV.

As per data from Planespotters.net, N795AV is a 7.5 year old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that was delivered to the airline back in October 2017.

Of the 787-8 variant, Avianca has 16 of them in their fleet.

Moreover, of the 16, 13 are in active service, with 13 being parked.

Overall, that variant of aircraft at the carrier has an average fleet age of 9.5 years.

Avianca flight AV17, which declared the emergency, departed Madrid at 1704 local time earlier today bound for Medellin.

Not long after departure, the aircraft declared the incident via the 7700 squawk code.

From there, the aircraft entered a series of holds before attempting an approach into the Spanish airport.

After not very long in the air, the aircraft landed safely without further incident.

Reason for the 787 Declaring an Emergency is Unknown…

At the time of writing (1820 UK time), the reason for the emergency onboard Avianca flight AV17 Madrid-Medellin is unknown.

What we do know is that it is serious enough to prompt a u-turn back to it’s origin airport.

No additional reports have come out on social media or via newsrooms so far, but we will continue to monitor this.

As soon as we have any updates, we will place them at the bottom of this article.

UPDATE #1 @ 24/4/25 2041 UK time – As per @FlightEmergency on X, the cause was an engine shutdown.
