An Avianca Boeing 787-8 operating from Paris to Bogota has declared an emergency whilst en route, prompting a diversion to Madrid.
Avianca flight AV229, a Boeing 787-9 out of Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG), declared the emergency with squawk code 7700 and is currently initiating a diversion.

Having declared an emergency whilst in the cruise, flight AV229 now appears to be making good a diversion to Madrid. We will confirm as soon as this is verified.
The nature of the emergency prompting the off-track diversion is not yet clear.

Avianca flight AV229 has now returned to a normal squawk code, perhaps indicating that the emergency is under control. This flight is continuing with the offtrack diversion to Madrid, and operating under normal flight procedures.
Flight crew had squawked emergency transponder code 7700 whilst in the cruise at FL300 (30,000 feet) at 08:03 UTC. The flight then initiated a diversion for Spain. After establishing the aircraft on a diversion track, flight crew then returned to normal squawk at 08:10 UTC. The flight is currently continuing at cruising level FL300.
The aircraft carrying out today’s AV229 service to Bogota El Dorado International Airport (BOG) is a Boeing 787-8, registered N780AV. This is a 9.9 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier Avianca.

Avianca flight AV229 is presently continuing on track for Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD), having just left cruising level FL300 on descent and under normal squawk code.

Having declared an emergency whilst enroute from Paris to Bogota this morning, Avianca flight AV229 had now landed at the diversion airport Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD).
