On 20 June 2024, Austrian Airlines celebrated the arrival of its second Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered OE-LPM.
This widebody delivery follows closely behind the successful inaugural flight of the first Dreamliner. The first aircraft, registered OE-LPL, operated to New York on June 15th.
OE-LPM received a warm welcome at Vienna Airport, complete with a traditional water salute.
Sporting its recently applied red-white-red Austrian Airlines livery, acquired in Teruel, Spain. The aircraft is now ready to start flight operations.
Nine more Boeing 787-9s will gradually replace Austrian Airlines’ existing long-haul jets by 2028.
Short-Haul Service Then Long-Haul Debut
While passengers can initially expect to see the OE-LPM gracing Austrian Airlines’ short-haul network in the coming days.
It will initially serve destinations like Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, and Berlin. The widebody jet will then transition to long-haul operations on June 28th.
This marks the aircraft’s commencement on long-haul routes with a transatlantic flight to Chicago.

A Modernization Milestone
The arrival of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner signifies a significant step forward for Austrian Airlines. It represents the beginning of a comprehensive fleet modernization and expansion program focused on long-haul travel.
By 2028, a total of eleven 787-9s are slated to join the Austrian Airlines fleet, gradually replacing existing Boeing 777 and 767 long-haul aircraft.
