Archer Aviation has surpassed its 2024 goal of 400 test flights, completing 402 flights by the end of August. This notable achievement comes approximately four months ahead of schedule.

With an original target of 400 test flights for the year, it highlights the company’s rapid progress in eVTOL aircraft development and testing.

2024 Flight Testing Program

Over the past eight months, Archer has significantly intensified its flight test operations. These comprehensive tests are crucial in preparing the company for the upcoming FAA-credited flight evaluations, a critical step towards commercial certification.

Adam Goldstein, Archer’s CEO and founder, expressed his pride in the team’s accomplishment: “Our initial target of 400 flights this year seemed ambitious when we set it. Yet, here we are in August, already exceeding it. I’m incredibly proud of our flight test team and all the supporting staff who made this achievement possible.”

Each test flight generates vital data that plays a crucial role in the development process. Archer’s teams use this information to assess and improve various aspects of the aircraft. This has included loads, vibrations, performance, and handling qualities. This data-driven approach ensures that every iteration brings them closer to a refined, market-ready product.

Recent Flight Testing Focus

Recently, Archer’s flight testing program has concentrated on several key areas to enhance the capabilities of their Midnight aircraft.

Transitional Flight

One major focus has been on transition flights, where the team is working on extending flight distances and speeds. These tests are essential for gathering crucial data, increasing the aircraft’s endurance, and ensuring the highest levels of safety during various flight phases.

High Rate Operations

Another critical aspect of recent testing has been high-rate operations. By boosting the frequency of daily flights, Archer aims to simulate the intense pace of future commercial operations.

This rigorous testing regime not only helps in evaluating the aircraft’s performance under demanding conditions but also serves to test and improve Midnight’s overall durability.

Landing Performance

Archer has also been dedicating significant efforts to perfecting landing profiles. The team has been performing a series of hover landings under various wind conditions, exploring different descent rates and flare heights.

This comprehensive approach allows them to expand Midnight’s wind capabilities and refine its landing techniques, ensuring smooth and safe operations across a wide range of environmental conditions.

Noise Footprint

Acoustic performance is another area receiving close attention. The company has been conducting specialized hover operations using diverse microphone setups.

This process allows them to collect additional data for FAA evaluation and helps in fine-tuning Midnight’s noise profile, an important factor for urban air mobility acceptance.

Lastly, Archer’s engineers have been focusing on control law optimization. By revisiting flight envelopes with improved control laws, they aim to extend Midnight’s endurance, further enhancing its operational capabilities and efficiency.

Other Recent Developments

This latest announcement follows a series of significant developments for Archer, including plans for a comprehensive eVTOL network in Los Angeles and recent strategic partnerships with major airlines such as Southwest Airlines and United Airlines. These collaborations underscore the growing interest and confidence in Archer’s eVTOL technology within the aviation industry.

Furthermore, Archer has achieved several major milestones recently, including obtaining certification to operate as a commercial airline. This crucial step brings them closer to their goal of revolutionizing urban transportation.

Adding to these achievements, Archer recently delivered its first aircraft to the United States Air Force, marking a significant entry into the defense sector and demonstrating the versatility of their technology.

As Archer Aviation continues to make strides in its testing and development programs, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of the emerging eVTOL market. With each successful flight and milestone achieved, Archer is not only proving the viability of its technology but also paving the way for a new era in urban air mobility.
