Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) has forged a new partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, to introduce electric air taxi services to the region.
This collaboration aims to revolutionize urban transportation in Africa, leveraging Archer’s innovative Midnight eVTOL aircraft.
Ethiopian Airlines becomes the second partner in Archer’s “Launch Edition” program. The program’s design establishes a scalable framework for deploying electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in key markets.
Pioneering Air Mobility in Africa
Ethiopian Airlines, a Star Alliance member with a vast network spanning over 140 international destinations, will collaborate with Archer to develop an all-electric air taxi network.
This initiative aims to transform commuting by offering faster, more sustainable alternatives to traditional ground transportation.
Archer’s Midnight aircraft, designed for rapid back-to-back flights with minimal charging time, will play a crucial role in this endeavor.
The “Launch Edition” program, unveiled by Archer in February 2025, focuses on deploying initial fleets of Midnight aircraft with Archer’s pilots, technicians, and engineers.
This comprehensive approach ensures smooth operational integration, public acceptance, and the generation of early revenue. Archer will also provide essential backend software infrastructure and user-friendly booking applications to support the urban air mobility operations.

Exploring Eco-Tourism Potential
While the primary focus is on establishing an efficient air taxi network, Archer and Ethiopian Airlines are also exploring the potential of using Midnight for eco-tourism. This opens up exciting possibilities for showcasing Africa’s natural beauty while minimizing environmental impact.
A signing ceremony in Addis Ababa saw the formalization of the new partnership. Both parties committed to working closely with the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) to ensure safe and efficient operations of the Midnight aircraft.
