All Nippon Airways (ANA) has become the first airline globally to implement “AeroSHARK” skin technology on Boeing 777 widebody aircraft.

ANA, Japan’s largest airline, will apply the “AeroSHARK” aerodynamic skin treatment across both its passenger and cargo 777 fleet.

Founded in 1952, ANA has consistently been at the forefront of aviation innovation. As a core member of the Star Alliance and a leading Japanese carrier, the company operates a comprehensive network of domestic and international routes.

With a fleet of over 250 aircraft and a reputation for technological excellence, ANA has long been recognized for its commitment to operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Pioneering AeroSHARK Technology

The AeroSHARK film, a collaborative development between Lufthansa Technik and BASF, represents a significant leap in aerodynamic engineering. Inspired by the microscopic riblet structures on shark skin, this innovative technology promises substantial environmental benefits.

Technical Specifications and Environmental Impact

  • Projected annual fuel consumption reduction: 250 tons
  • Estimated annual CO2 emissions decrease: 800 tons
  • Strategic alignment with ANA Group’s net-zero emissions target by fiscal year 2050

Technology Explained: Riblet Film Mechanics

The AeroSHARK film mimics shark skin’s natural hydrodynamic properties. By creating microscopic surface structures, the technology significantly reduces air resistance, enabling more efficient aircraft movement. This biomimetic approach transforms aerodynamic performance by manipulating airflow at a molecular level.

ANA’s current initiative builds upon previous sustainability efforts. Since October 2022, the airline has been conducting extensive research through its “ANA Future Promise” program, testing riblet film technologies on select aircraft to validate performance and durability.

Implementation and Rollout

ANA first deployed the technology on a Boeing 777 Freighter (JA771F), which began cargo operations on September 2, 2024. This initial phase will allow the airline to gather critical performance data and validate the technology’s effectiveness in a cargo configuration.

Following the freighter deployment, ANA will introduce a passenger aircraft (JA796A) configured with the AeroSHARK film on international routes in spring 2025. This phased rollout ensures a comprehensive and controlled evaluation of the technology across different operational contexts.

Throughout the implementation process, ANA will conduct testing and performance monitoring. This rigorous approach will enable the airline to meticulously assess the aerodynamic film’s impact on fuel efficiency, emissions reduction, and overall aircraft performance.

By carefully tracking and analyzing the results, ANA can make informed decisions about expanding the technology across its broader fleet.

Future Outlook

Hideki Matsui from ANA’s Structural Engineering Team (pictured above) articulated the company’s vision. “As a responsible global carrier, we are committed to pushing technological boundaries to minimize our environmental footprint. The AeroSHARK project exemplifies our dedication to sustainable aviation.”

This implementation signals ANA’s strategic commitment to environmental stewardship. By pioneering such innovative solutions, the airline is setting new industry standards for efficiency and ecological responsibility.

The ANA Group continues to demonstrate that cutting-edge technology and environmental consciousness can coexist, driving the aviation industry towards a more sustainable future.
