Last weekend, ANA flight NH1639 between Osaka and Matsuyama suffered an engine problem, prompting a return back to the airport.
Information has been released pertinent to this incident, which we will get into in this article.

ANA Flight NH1639 Osaka-Matsuyama…
ANA flight NH1639, which suffered the engine problem, is a routine scheduled flight between Osaka and Matsuyama.
Furthermore, it is understood that the aircraft involved in the incident was JA855A.
As per data from Planespotters.net, JA855A is a 14.7 year old Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 that started out life with the airline in February 2010.
Of the Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 variant, ANA has 24 of them in their fleet.
Moreover, of that 24, all but one are in active service, with an average fleet age of 15.7 years.
As well as the Q400, the airline also has the other following aircraft in their mainline fleet:
- 11 Airbus A320s.
- 26 Airbus A321s.
- 3 Airbus A380s.
- 39 Boeing 737s.
- 23 Boeing 767s.
- 30 Boeing 777s.
- 85 Boeing 787s.
In total, the airline has 241 aircraft in their fleet, of which 217 are in active service, with an average fleet age of 10.7 years overall.
ANA flight NH1639 departed Osaka at 1118 local time on July 28, and initially climbed out to Matsuyama.
As per reporting from The Aviation Herald, it is understood an engine malfunction occurred during the climb-out.
That prompted the shutdown of the engine by the crew and for a u-turn back to Itami Airport to occur.
The aircraft landed safely without further incident following that engine problem on the aircraft.
Aircraft Grounded Over Two Days On…
Data from RadarBox highlights that JA855A, the ANA Dash 8-Q400 involved in the incident on NH1639 is still grounded at the time of writing following the incident (30/7/24 @ 1930 UK time).
Furthermore, it is unclear at the time of writing when the aircraft will return to commercial service.
This is due to maintenance crews needing to check the severity of the damage, if any, caused from the malfunction.
Once the necessary repairs are made, then the aircraft can either reposition or return to service straight away.
