ANA B777-300 Rejected Takeoff in Tokyo Due to Engine Failure

An ANA B777-300 departing for San Francisco rejected takeoff at high speed at Tokyo Haneda after suffering an engine failure on 9 October.

An All Nippon Airways (ANA) Boeing 777-300 rejected its takeoff from Tokyo Haneda after sustaining an engine failure on 9 October 2024.

ANA flight NH108, operated by a B777-300, was preparing to depart for San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The flight was given a clearance for takeoff from runway 34R Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND). During the takeoff roll, the aircraft experienced a failure of its right-hand engine.

As a result, flight crew performed a rejected takeoff at high speed. The aircraft was brought to a stop on the runway under positive directional control. The flight then vacated the active runway and return to the apron hardstanding area.

Airport authorities closed the runway in question for almost 4 hours to permit and inspection and removal of engine debris.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Transport, the aircraft suffered turbine blade damage to its right-hand engine. The takeoff incident will now be the subject of a formal investigation.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight NH108 had attempted the departure from Tokyo Haneda airport at 0329 local time on 9 October.

ATC gave the aircraft clearance for takeoff from runway 34R. Flight crew initiated the rejected takeoff as the aircraft accelerated through 113kt.

The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to conduct the scheduled flight to San Francisco International Airport.

The aircraft conducting the NH108 service to San Francisco was a Boeing 777-300ER, registered JA791A. This is 9.6-year-old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier All Nippon Airways. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in April 2015.
