By May 2020, Transavia France took delivery of the aircraft.

Within the 68, all but two are in active service, with an average fleet age of 11.7 years.

For Transavia flight TO7646 Paris-Lisbon to make an emergency landing into Porto due to an iPad has a good reason.

It is understood that no one took ownership of the device, which prompted concern by crew onboard.

Digital equipment can be used in the worst case as a bomb.

We have seen this over the years via the following accidents:

  • Air India Flight 182 – Bomb hidden in a radio tuner.
  • Pan Am Flight 103 – Bomb hidden in a radio recorder.
  • Avianca Flight 203 – Bomb hidden in a pair of headphones.
  • Philippine Airlines Flight 434 – Bomb hidden in a wrist watch.

With this in mind, the crew did the correct thing and declare an emergency.

This is due to the fact there was no way to tell whether the iPad onboard Transavia Flight TO7646 Paris-Lisbon was a threat to the aircraft.

It is better to make an emergency diversion into an airport like Porto to ensure proper checks are made.

As soon as we have more information pertinent to this incident, then we will update you accordingly.
