American Flight AA5971 Declares Emergency, Returns to Charlotte

American Airlines flight AA5971, an ERJ-145 bound for Huntington WV, declared an emergency after takeoff before returning to Charlotte (CLT) earlier today.

An American Airlines flight operating from Charlotte, NC to Huntington, WV declared an emergency shortly after departure on 4 January 2025.

American Airlines flight AA5971, operated by an Embraer ERJ-145, had declared an emergency with squawk code 7700 after departing Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).

Following the declaration, flight crew carried out a direct return to the origin airport. The nature of the emergency prompting the return is not yet known.

The flight subsequently landed at Charlotte approximately 20 minutes after its initial departure.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that American Airlines flight AA5971 had departed from Charlotte Douglas International Airport at 1325 local time on 4 January. The flight was a scheduled regional service to Huntington Tri-State Airport (HTS)

Following departure, the aircraft had climbed to flight level FL220 (22,000 feet) before flight crew terminated the procedure.

A descent and return track to Charlotte was then initiated. Flight crew then squawked transponder code 7700 at 1845 UTC, as the aircraft descended through FL130.

The aircraft conducting the AA5971 service to Huntington Tri-State Airport was an Embraer ERJ-145, registered N695AE. This is a 20.2 year old regional jet aircraft belonging to the carrier American Eagle. It is operated by Piedmont Airlines on behalf of the carrier.

Piedmont Airlines is a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Airlines.  It operates flights under the American Eagle brand.

The aircraft has been in operational service with the carrier since its initial delivery from the factory in December 2004.
