American ERJ-175 Declares Emergency, Diverts to Pittsburgh Due to Smoke Odor Onboard

An American ERJ-175 operating from New York to Indianapolis, declared an emergency and diverted to Pittsburgh due to a smoke odor on board on 20 January.

A Republic Airways ERJ-175 operating an American Airlines service from New York to Indianapolis diverted to Pittsburgh after reporting an odor of smoke on board.

American Airlines flight AA4565, operated by a Republic Airways Embraer ERJ-175, had made a departure from New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA). The flight was to be a regular scheduled service to Indianapolis International Airport (IND).

Whilst en route in cruising flight, flight crew reported the presence of an unusual odor on board. They then initiated an expedited descent to 10,000 feet, and a precautionary diversion to nearby Pittsburgh was conducted

According to the Online Herald, flight crew requested medical assistance to be on hand for their flight attendant upon landing. The aircraft subsequently landed without incident on runway 28L Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT).

On landing, the aircraft vacated and then stopped clear of the active runway. Flight crew then requested that emergency services carry out an inspection to determine if any smoke was visible emanating from the aircraft.

The attending emergency services personnel confirmed that no smoke was sighted during the inspection. The flight crew confirmed that the smoke odour had dissipated after the aircraft descended to 10,000 feet.

Flight data shows that flight AA4565 had made an on-time departure from New York LaGuardia Airport at 0915 local time on 20 January.

Following departure, flight crew climbed the aircraft to flight level FL320 for the westerly service to Indianapolis International Airport.

An emergency descent was carried out as the aircraft passed approximately 100 nautical miles to the east of Pittsburgh on flight plan track.

During the descent procedure, flight crew squawked emergency transponder code 7700 at 1533 UTC. The diversion to Pittsburgh International Airport was then conducted at the reduced altitude of 10,000 feet.

The aircraft conducting the AA4565 service from New York LaGuardia was an Embraer ERJ-175, registered N424YX. This is an 11-year-old regional aircraft belonging to the carrier American Eagle, and operated by Republic Airways.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in March 2014.
