The crisis began when a passenger reportedly exhibited disruptive and violent behavior, including claims of Satanic influence. The inflight incident on left passengers and crew shaken, raising questions about in-flight safety and mental health.

According to reports and affidavits, Delange Augustin, the passenger in question, began displaying erratic behavior shortly after takeoff.

Witnesses described him as yelling, shaking, and appearing to have a seizure. The situation escalated rapidly when Augustin allegedly swallowed rosary beads and became increasingly aggressive.

The situation turned violent, with Augustin allegedly attacking a flight attendant, kicking them, and attempting to assault other crew members and passengers. Crew members and fellow passengers worked to restrain the individual.

Adding to the bizarre nature of the incident, Augustin’s sister, who was traveling with him, revealed that they were fleeing what they perceived as “religious attacks of a spiritual nature”.

She stated that he believed “Satan’s disciple(s)” had followed them onto the plane. She explained that her brother swallowed the rosary beads, believing they were a spiritual weapon for protection.

The flight was promptly diverted back to Savannah, where law enforcement officers were waiting to take Augustin into custody. He now faces charges related to the in-flight disturbance.

This incident highlights the challenges airlines face in managing disruptive passengers, particularly those experiencing mental health episodes.

It also brings to the forefront the importance of addressing mental health concerns and ensuring appropriate support systems are in place.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the airline are likely to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the crew’s response.

The incident also serves as a stark reminder of the potential for unexpected and disruptive behavior on flights.
