UPDATE #1 @ 1927 UK time – The emergency American Airlines flight AA859 Charlotte-Nassau is currently in some holds following the 7700 declaration.
UPDATE #2 @ 1930 UK time – N928AN is the aircraft involved in the incident.
Furthermore, as per Planespotters, N928AN is a 25.1 year old Boeing 737-800 that was delivered to the airline in February 2000.
Also, of the 737-800 variant, the airline has 303 of them in their fleet.
Moreover, of the 303, 291 are in active service and 12 are parked, with an average fleet age of 15.3 years.
UPDATE #3 @ 1932 UK time – Emergency American Airlines flight AA859 has come out of it’s holds and is returning to Charlotte rather than continuing to Nassau.
UPDATE #4 @ 1933 UK time – At this stage, the cause is unclear.
What we do know is that it is serious enough for the 7700 squawk code and a return.
UPDATE #5 @ 1935 UK time – AA859 is preparing to make a downwind procedure in preparation for the approach back into CLT.
UPDATE #6 @ 1937 UK time – The aircraft is now on the downwind for the approach.
EMERGENCY UPDATE #7 @ 1938 UK time – The aircraft has changed squawk to 6066.
The change indicates a control in the emergency situation.
However, we will continue to monitor the aircraft until landing.

UPDATE #9 @ 1942 UK time – Aircraft is now on final approach into Charlotte.

Emergency American Airlines flight AA859 has touched down back into Charlotte.
At this time, it is unclear why the Nassau-bound flight declared the emergency and returned.
