An American Airlines flight operating from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia declared an emergency during the descent into the destination earlier today.
American Airlines flight AA73, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER was on descent through flight level FL170 when the emergency was declared . Flight crew squawked transponder code 7700, and continued the approach into Sydney.

American flight AA73 was a scheduled service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The flight had conducted a normal departure from Los Angeles at 23:04 local time on 14 December.
Following the departure, the flight had proceeded normally, climbing to flight level FL360 (36,000 feet) for the transpacific service to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD).
Initial descent procedure was similarly carried out normally. The flight crew squawked transponder code 7700 at 21:30 UTC as the aircraft passed through flight level FL170. The flight then continued its approach to Sydney Airport, maintaining the priority emergency transponder code 7700.
The nature of the emergency is not yet known.

The aircraft conducting the AA73 rotation from Los Angeles was a Boeing 777-300ER, registered N722AN. This is an 11.7 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier American Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in April 2013.
Update: Low Fuel State Prompts Emergency Declaration
According to the online source @FlightEmergency, American Airlines flight AA73 declared an emergency for landing priority due to a low fuel state.
