American Airlines B787-8 Returns to Miami With Gear Door Problem

An American Airlines B787-8 departing for New York JFK returned to Miami after experiencing a landing gear door problem on 6 November.

An American Airlines Boeing 787-8 departing for New York JFK made a precautionary return to Miami, FL after experiencing a gear door problem on 6 November 2024.

American Airlines flight AA525, operated by a Boeing 787-8, had conducted a departure from runway 08R Miami International Airport (MIA). The aircraft was conducting a scheduled service to New York JFK International Airport.

Shortly after takeoff, flight crew reported a problem with the landing gear doors. As a result, the climb procedure was terminated and the aircraft was placed in a holding pattern to conduct troubleshooting checks.

After a short period of holding in the immediate vicinity of the airport, the aircraft then returned and was able to land on runway 09 without further incident. Following the incident, the aircraft was returned to operational service approximately three days later. The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to complete the scheduled AA525 service to New York JFK International Airport.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight AA525 and made a slightly delayed departure out of Miami international airport at 1950 local time on 6 November. Scheduled departure time for the service was listed as 0904 local time.

Following the takeover from runway 08R, flight crew terminated the climb procedure at 5000 feet. Holding procedures were then conducted at that altitude, before the aircraft was returned to the origin airport.

The aircraft conducting the AA525 rotation to New York was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, registered N873BB. This is a 4.3-year-old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier American Airlines. It has been an operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in April 2021.
