American Airlines B787-8 Returns to Buenos Aires Due to Smoke in Cabin

An American Airlines B787-8 bound for Miami made a precautionary return to Buenos Aires after reporting the smell of smoke in the cabin on 19 April.

An American Airlines flight departing Buenos Aires for Miami returned to Ezeiza International Airport after reporting the smell of smoke in the cabin on 19 April.

Airlines flight AA908, operated by a Boeing 787-8, had conducted a departure from Ezeiza International Airport (EZE).

The aircraft was conducting a regular scheduled flight bound for Miami International Airport (MIA).

The flight was outbound in Paraguayan airspace when flight crew reported the odour of smoke in the aircraft cabin. The aircraft was approximately 500 nautical miles to the north of Buenos Aires on flight plan track when the report was made.

Accordingly, flight crew elected to make a precautionary return to Buenos Aires. A direct track to the origin airport was then carried out.

The aircraft was able to land without further incident on runway 11 Ezeiza International Airport approximately 2.5 hours after the initial departure.

The onwards scheduled service to Miami was subsequently cancelled. No injuries were reported as a result of the in-flight incident.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that American Airlines flight AA908 and departed from Ezeiza International Airport at 1108 local time on 19 April.

Following departure, the flight had then set course normally, climbing to flight level FL370 for the northerly service to Miami.

The flight was at cruising altitude in Paraguayan airspace when the decision was made to return to the origin airport.

The aircraft conducting the AA908 service to Miami International Airport was a Boeing 787-8, registered N815AA. This is a nine year old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier American Airlines. It has been operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in May 2016.
