American Airlines B737-8 MAX Engine Fire After Takeoff From Phoenix

An American Airlines B737-8 MAX departing for Santa Ana made a return to Phoenix after reporting a left-hand engine fire after takeoff on 18 November.

An American Airlines Boeing 737-8 MAX departing from Phoenix, AZ to Santa Ana, CA reported an engine fire after takeoff on 18 November 2024.

American Airlines flight AA2466, operated by a Boeing 737-8 MAX, was conducting a departure from runway 07L Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport (PHX). The flight was a scheduled service to Santa Ana John Wayne Airport (SNA).

 Shortly after takeoff, flight crew reported a fire in the aircraft’s left hand engine. The climb was discontinued and a direct return to the origin airport was initiated.

The flight subsequently landed without further incident on runway 08 Phoenix PHX,  approximately 15 minutes after its initial departure.

The flight crew reported that they had discharged and engine fire bottle and managed to extinguish the fire. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) report confirmed to the incident.

“Aircraft returned to airport due to left engine fire and fire was extinguished, Phoenix, AZ.”

 Flight data shows that flight AA2466 had made an on-time departure out of Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport at 0833 local time on 18 November.

 Following the takeoff from runway 07L, flight crew terminated the climb at 5000 ft. A direct return to the origin airport was then conducted.

 The aircrafts conducting the AA2466 service to California was a Boeing 737-8 MAX,  registered N330TJ.  This is a 1.3 year old narrow body aircraft belonging to the carrier American Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in August 2023.
