American Airlines A319-100 Returns to Portland After Engine Fire Indication

An American Airlines A319-100 departing for Philadelphia returned to Portland, ME after reporting an engine fire indication on 23 October.

An American Airlines Airbus A319-100 departing for Philadelphia, PA returned to Portland, ME after reporting an engine fire indication on 23 October 2024.

American Airlines flight AA1087 had conducted a departure from runway 11 Portland International Jetport (PWM). The flight was a scheduled service to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).

Shortly after takeoff flight crew reported receiving a right-hand engine fire indication. The climb was terminated and the engine shutdown and secured.

A direct return to Portland was then requested. According to the online source Aviation Herald, flight crew subsequently advised that they were receiving an intermittent fire indication for the right-hand engine. Operating crew advised that they would stop the aircraft on the runway to permit the ground examination by emergency services assets.

Following a direct return to the origin airport, the flight landed without further incident on runway 11 approximately 20 minutes after its initial departure.

Flight data shows that flight AA1087 had made a delayed departure out of Portland International Jetport on 23 October. Actual time of departure for the service was logged as 1413 local time. The scheduled departure time for the service is listed as 1317 local time.

Following the takeoff from runway 11, the aircraft had climbed to 3000 feet before flight crew terminated the climb procedure. A direct return to the origin airport was then conducted.

The aircraft conducting the AA1087 service to Philadelphia International Airport was an Airbus A319-100, registered N704US. This is a 25.9 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier American Airlines.

It has been an operational service with the airline since December 2013. Prior to its current service it operated under US Airways from its initial delivery from the factory in December 1998.
