American Airlines 737-800 Diverts to Raleigh/Durham Due to Smoke on Board

An American Airlines Boeing 737-800 operating a service from Charlotte, NC to Hertford, CT made a precautionary diversion to Raleigh/Durham on 15 August 2024.

American Airlines flight AA2392, a Boeing 737-800 out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), was still in the climb when flight crew reported the presence of smoke on board. The crew donned oxygen masks and made the decision to divert to nearby Raleigh/Durham International Airport as a precaution.

The aircraft was descended below 10,000 feet. Flight crew then entered a brief holding procedure to permit them to conduct necessary troubleshooting checks.

According to the online source Aviation Herald, the American flight crew requested emergency services assets to be on standby for their arrival into Raleigh/Durham. They indicated that this was precautionary and that they were not planning to evacuate the aircraft.

The flight subsequently landed at the diversion airport Raleigh/Durham (RDC). It landed just over half an hour after the climb procedure was discontinued.

The aircraft was subsequently towed to the apron hardstanding area after landing.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that American Airlines flight AA2392 had made an on-time departure out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport at 0718 local time on 15 August.

The flight had then set course normally. The aircraft passing through flight level FL310 (31,000 feet) when flight crew discontinued the climb.

A diversion and descent below 10,000 feet was then conducted. The aircraft conducting the AA2392 service from Charlotte was a Boeing 737-800, registered N989AN. This is a 15.3 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier American Airlines.

It has been in operational service with the carrier since June 2009.
