The aircraft was conducting a scheduled freighter service inbound from Lagos-Murtala Muhammed International Airport. During the subsequent landing roll the aircraft lost directional control and veered off the right-hand side of the runway.

FAAN Statement

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) released a statement confirming the incident, which occurred at 1005 local time on 11 December 2024.

“At 10:05am today, December 11, 2024, an Allied Air Cargo aircraft with registration number 5N-JRT skidded off Runway 22 at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. There were five (5) souls on board with no reported injury. They were all safely evacuated and taken to the FAAN clinic for further checks.”

The FAAN statement confirmed that the airport emergency response team attended the scene of the runway excursion accident. Investigators also attended the accident site.

Authorities have not cited a cause for the loss of control resulting in the runway excursion. The FAAN announced that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) will release a preliminary report in due course.

Photographs surfacing on social media show the aircraft had come to rest in a grassy area near the duty runway. A landing gear assembly separated from the aircraft.

The landing accident resulted in a temporary closure of the airport’s runway. The accident resulted in significant delays for inbound and outbound traffic.
